Design your town, design your region

Robert Lane, RA

·  Senior Fellow for Community Design and Development, Regional Plan Association (RPA), Principal, Plan & Process LLC

This fall, RPA will release its 4th Regional Plan - A Region Transformed. As with the previous three plans, this plan will lay out the major infrastructure, open space, community development and policy initiatives needed to insure the future prosperity and sustainability of the 31 county New York/New Jersey/Connecticut. Also, in keeping with the previous plans, A Region Transformed will present support these initiatives with design concepts for cities, buildings and landscapes. Much of this work was developed through 4C: Four Corridors: Foreseeing the Region of the Future Corridors: Foreseeing the Region of the Future (currently on view at MoMA PS1 and Fort Tilden) which engaged four teams to take on design challenges across four large geographies across the region.  In addition, RPA is developing a number of tools to help citizen planners and designers implement the best practices for design.  First of among these is the Design Your Town web-based community design manual.

In this presentation, Rob Lane will summarize the role of design in the 4th Plan, as well as give a brief live demonstration of the Design Your Town web-based design manual.
